It was founded in 1888 in Cuyahoga County and extended into Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties by 1950. It negotiates contracts for various locals with individual contractors and with the Carpenter Contractors' Association, the Home Builders' Association, and the Building Trades Employers' Association. The collection consists of constitutions, minutes, financial records, grievances and legal proceedings, jurisdictional disputes and decisions, election material, and correspondence. | | | Creator: | Consumers League of Ohio | | | Dates: | 1899-1995 | | | Abstract: | The Consumers League of Ohio was founded in 1900 as part of a social justice movement of the late nineteenth century which resulted in the formation of many consumer leagues. The Consumer's League of Ohio, founded only one year after the National Consumers League, began in April 1900. Bell Sherwin (daughter of one of the men who founded the Sherwin-Williams company) helped set the Ohio league in motion and served as the first president of the organization. The Consumers League of Ohio was initially run out of the Goodrich House and dedicated its efforts to the improvement of working conditions for women and children employed in factories and retail establishments.
